Published on November 12, 2023 10 min read

Color theory is a fundamental concept for designers, artists, and anyone creating visual content. Understanding how colors interact and influence perception can help you create more effective and appealing designs.

The Color Wheel

The traditional color wheel includes:

  • Primary colors: Red, blue, and yellow (cannot be created by mixing other colors)
  • Secondary colors: Green, orange, and purple (created by mixing primary colors)
  • Tertiary colors: Created by mixing primary and secondary colors

Color Harmonies

Common color harmony schemes include:

  • Complementary: Colors opposite each other on the wheel (high contrast)
  • Analogous: Colors next to each other on the wheel (harmonious)
  • Triadic: Three colors evenly spaced on the wheel (vibrant)
  • Monochromatic: Variations in lightness and saturation of a single hue

Color Models

Different systems for representing color:

  • RGB: Additive model used for screens (Red, Green, Blue)
  • CMYK: Subtractive model used for printing (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black)
  • HSL/HSV: Models based on human perception (Hue, Saturation, Lightness/Value)

Using Our Color Picker Tool

Our Color Picker tool helps you explore colors in different formats (HEX, RGB, HSL). You can select colors visually and see how they convert between different models, making it easier to implement consistent colors across various media.

Remember that color perception can vary based on cultural context and individual differences, so always consider your target audience when selecting color schemes.
